How to make a Faux Leather Mini Basket

This sweet Faux Leather Mini Basket made with a Cricut is so fun and easy to make! Fill the mini basket with a gift card, lip balm, and other small skin care products to make the perfect little Spring gift – or fill it with candy for a mini Easter basket!
In this tutorial I’ll show you how to make this two ways: with rivets for a polished finish, or with just glue for a beginner-friendly option. The basket measures 4 inches square at the bottom and 5 inches tall, including the handle.

Step 3: Make the Project
Set Up Your Design
- Open a new canvas in Cricut Design Space.
- Upload the SVG file for the Mini Basket to your canvas. This project will use 2 pieces of faux leather.
- If you don’t want to use rivets for this project you can hide all of the rivet holes and glue the basket together instead. To do that, click on the Contour option in the bottom right of the Layers panel. Then click on each pre-cut hole to “hide” it and keep it from cutting. When you exit the Contour menu, all of the holes should be hidden. If you missed any, go back to Contour and repeat the process.
Prepare to Cut
- Click Make It.
- Keep the large basket shape on one mat and move the handle and square shape to a second mat. I like to make this pattern from two different coordinating pieces of faux leather to add interest to the mini basket.
- If your faux leather is thin, you may want to cut two handles so you can glue them back to back to make a sturdier handle.
- Mirror your mats, since you’ll be cutting the faux leather face down.
- Choose the Faux Leather (Paper Thin) setting with More pressure.
Cut the Faux Leather
- Place the faux leather pretty side down on a Strong Grip (purple) mat.
- Secure all edges with blue painter’s tape.
- Load the mat into your Cricut.
- Press the C button to begin cutting.
- When the cut is complete, without unloading the mat, use a sharp tool to gently lift the edge and check the cut.
- Repeat the cut if necessary by pressing the cut button again.
- Once the cut is complete, unload the mat and remove the shapes.
- Use a sharp weeding tool to poke through the pre-cut holes as needed.
- Repeat cutting the second faux leather mat.
Assemble the Basket with Rivets
- Fold up two of the basket sides. Then fold one tab side over the adjacent side and line up the holes.
- Insert 6mm rivets to connect. Push the rivets closed with your fingers to keep them tight as you repeat inserting all of the rivets around the basket.
- Use rivet tools and a hammer to secure all of the rivets closed.
📺You can watch a video tutorial that shows how to apply 6mm rivets here.
Or Assemble the Basket with Glue
- Fold up two of the basket sides. Then fold one tab side over the adjacent side. Apply glue to the back of the tab and glue it to the front of the adjacent side. Use a clip of some kind to keep the glue tab in place for a few hours until they dry. Cover the ends of the clip with a soft cloth so you don’t get clip marks in your faux leather.
- Repeat gluing all of the tabbed sides. Let the basket dry completely before removing the clips.
Insert the Basket Base
- Apply fabric or craft glue to the underside of the faux leather square shape. Press it firmly inside the bottom of the basket. Allow it to dry well.
Attach the Handle
- If your faux leather is thin, you may want to cut two handles and glue them back to back before attaching the handle.
- Use 6mm rivets to attach the handle to the basket, or apply glue to the handle and clip the handle ends in place to dry.
- Use ribbon to tie bows on the handle if desired.
Your Square Mini Basket is complete! Fill it with small gifts or candy to create an adorable gift basket for someone special.

Answers to your questions about making Faux Leather Mini Baskets
Q: Which Cricut machines will cut faux leather?
A: You can cut faux leather with any of the current Cricut machines because they all cut faux leather with the standard fine point blade included with each machine. For this project you can use the Cricut Maker, Cricut Maker 3, Cricut Maker 4, Cricut Explore 5, Cricut Explore 4, Cricut Explore 3, Cricut Explore Air 2, the Cricut Joy Xtra or the Cricut Joy (however, this Mini Basket pattern is too large to fit on the Cricut Joy).
Q: What glue do I use with faux leather?
A: I like to use Beacon Fabri-Tac for gluing faux leather because it spreads thinly and evenly without clumps and it doesn’t absorb into the faux leather. It also cleans up easily with just a finger wipe or a paper towel. It dries nice and flat for a very smooth finish. However you can also use a good craft glue like Bearly Art Glue – however you will need to apply more than Beacon Fabri-Tac because Bearly Art Glue tends to absorb into the faux leather backing.
Q: How do I get the SVG template for this project?
