Step 3: Make the Project
Set Up Your Design
- Open a new canvas in Cricut Design Space.
- Upload the SVG file for the Stacked Butterfly Bag Tag to your canvas.
- Recolor all of the shapes to be the same color if you want to cut them on the same mat (optional).
Prepare to Cut
- Click Make It.
- Mirror your mat(s), since you’ll be cutting the faux leather face down.
- Position your faux leather shapes apart on the mat if cutting from different prints.
- Choose the Faux Leather (Paper Thin) setting with More pressure.
Cut the Faux Leather
- Place the faux leather pretty side down on a Strong Grip (purple) mat.
- Secure all edges with blue painter’s tape.
- Load the mat into your Cricut.
- Press the C button to begin cutting.
- When the cut is complete, without unloading the mat, use a sharp tool to gently lift the edge and check the cut.
- Repeat the cut if necessary by pressing the cut button again.
- Once the cut is complete, unload the mat and remove the shapes.
Assemble the Bag Tag
- Place the long back layer backside up on your work surface. Thread your keyring to the middle area.
- Apply fabric glue on one half of the long shape. Fold over and press together. Place glued shape under a heavy book to dry for about an hour.
- Push a 6mm rivet post through the middle hole in each of the butterfly layer pairs. Push the posts through the folded and glued base layer, starting with the largest butterfly pair in the bottom hole.
- Place rivet caps onto the back of the posts.
- Use rivet tools and a hammer to flatten the rivets and secure the layers together tightly.
- After all the butterfly pairs are secured, apply one last 6mm rivet to the top hole in the faux leather base, between the top butterfly and the keyring. Hammer the rivet closed.

Answers to your questions about making a Faux Leather Butterfly Bag Tag with a Cricut
Q: Which Cricut machines will cut faux leather?
A: You can cut faux leather with any of the current Cricut machines because they all cut faux leather with the standard fine point blade included with each machine. For this project you can use the Cricut Maker, Cricut Maker 3, Cricut Maker 4, Cricut Explore 5, Cricut Explore 4, Cricut Explore 3, Cricut Explore Air 2, the Cricut Joy Xtra or the Cricut Joy (for this project you’ll need the 12 inch long Joy mat).
Q: What tools do I need to assemble the rivet?
A: The rivets I used are 6mm x 6mm in size (meaning the cap is 6mm round and the post is 6mm long). The rivets I purchased came with the tools you need to add the rivets to the bag tag. You just need a household hammer.
Q: How do I get the SVG template for this project?
A: Get the SVG file from my SVG Shop here.

i was curious about what looks like paint or shading around the edge of the back piece (the white). nothing is mentioned in the supplies. on closer look, is that just for display? thanks!
hi, Mary Lois! That’s just a wooden element I used as a photo prop. My apologies for any confusion!
