Step 3: Make the Project
Set Up Your Design
- Open a new canvas in Cricut Design Space.
- Upload the SVG file for the Flower Mini Coin Purse to your canvas.
- If you want to cut both the purse shapes and the flower petals on the same mat to save time, change all three layers to the same color so Design Space puts them all on the same mat.
Prepare to Cut
- Click Make It.
- Mirror your mats, since you’ll be cutting the faux leather face down.
- Choose the Faux Leather (Paper Thin) setting with More pressure.
Cut the Faux Leather
- Place the faux leather pretty side down on a Strong Grip (purple) mat.
- Secure all edges with blue painter’s tape.
- Load the mat into your Cricut.
- Press the C button to begin cutting.
- When the cut is complete, without unloading the mat, use a sharp tool to gently lift the edge and check the cut.
- Repeat the cut if necessary by pressing the cut button again.
- Once the cut is complete, unload the mat and remove the shapes.
- Use a sharp weeding tool to poke through the pre-cut holes as needed.
- Repeat cutting the second faux leather mat if you didn’t cut all of the shapes on one mat.
Assemble the Kam Snaps
- Attach your Size 20 Kam Snap to the mini coin purse.
- Gather your Size 20 Kam Snaps and Kam Snap pliers. See the Installation Graphic in your download folder to see which four snap pieces you need to create one snap.
- Place a snap cap through the top flap from the outside of the flap to the inside.
- Hold the Kam Snap so it doesn’t fall out of the hole and flip the flap over. Place a socket on the post.
- Squeeze the cap and the socket tight to close using the Kam Snap pliers.
- Then apply another cap and a stud to the inside front of the purse.
📺You can watch a video tutorial that shows how to apply Kam Snaps in a similar project here.
Assemble the Mini Purse Body
- Apply the rivets to one side of the purse at a time.
- Start by inserting three rivets in the holes on the middle flap of the purse shape – the ones that stick out horizontally.
- Press them from the backside of the faux leather so the posts poke through to the patterned side.
- Once you have three rivets on one flap, fold the back flap with three holes onto those rivet posts.
- Then fold the front flap with three holes over onto the rivets.
- If you are on the side with the small keychain tab, fold that tab over onto the top rivet, too.
- Once all three purse flaps are pressed onto the three rivet posts, add rivet caps to the posts.
- Repeat on the other side of the purse.
- Using a hammer and the rivet hardware, hammer the rivets closed. Bend the faux leather as needed to access the rivets inside.
📺You can watch a video tutorial that shows how to apply 6mm rivets to a similar project here.
Assemble the Flower on the Flap
- Push an 8mm enamel rivet through the petal centers and then through the hole in the purse flap.
- Add a rivet cap to the backside and hammer the rivet closed with the rivet tools.
Glue the Purse Base Inside
- Apply fabric glue or craft glue inside the purse along the bottom only. Press the rectangle faux leather shape into the purse, pretty side up, onto the glue. Press it flat. This piece adds structure to the mini coin purse.
Add the Keychain Hardware
- Then attach your keyring hardware to the small tab on the side of the purse. Be careful not to damage the faux leather if you are sliding a split ring keyring on.
- Use pliers and jump rings to add any tassels or charms, if desired.
Your Flower Mini Coin Purse is complete! Fill it with small essential items and clip it to your keys or purse.

Answers to your questions about making a Faux Leather Flower Mini Coin Purse with a Cricut
Q: Which Cricut machines will cut faux leather?
A: You can cut faux leather with any of the current Cricut machines because they all cut faux leather with the standard fine point blade included with each machine. For this project you can use the Cricut Maker, Cricut Maker 3, Cricut Maker 4, Cricut Explore 5, Cricut Explore 4, Cricut Explore 3, Cricut Explore Air 2, the Cricut Joy Xtra or the Cricut Joy (this particular pattern is too large to make with the Joy).
Q: What glue do I use with faux leather?
A: I like to use Beacon Fabri-Tac for gluing faux leather because it spreads thinly and evenly without clumps and it doesn’t absorb into the faux leather. It also cleans up easily with just a finger wipe or a paper towel. It dries nice and flat for a very smooth finish. However you can also use a good craft glue like Bearly Art Glue – however you will need to apply more than Beacon Fabri-Tac because Bearly Art Glue tends to absorb into the faux leather backing.
Q: How do I get the SVG template for this project?
