Step 3: Make the Project

Set Up Your Design

  1. Open a new canvas in Cricut Design Space. Upload the Flower Name Keychain SVG.
  2. Type out a name in Design Space. Drag it onto the keychain shape and size it so it fits within the height of the keychain shape and is no more than 2.5″ wide (unless you want your text to wrap around the keychain).
  3. I used a font called Keep On Truckin’ which is free on the Dafont website.

Prepare to Cut

  1. Click Make It.
  2. Mirror your mat since you’ll be cutting the faux leather and heat transfer vinyl face down.
  3. Choose the Faux Leather (Paper Thin) material setting with More pressure for the faux leather mat.
  4. Trim two pieces of faux leather (one for the flower and one for the strap) to sizes just larger than the sizes shown in the mat preview screen for each shape.

Cut the Faux Leather

  1. Place the faux leathers pretty side down on a Strong Grip (purple) mat.
  2. Secure all edges with blue painter’s tape.
  3. Load the mat into your Cricut.
  4. Press the C button to begin cutting.
  5. When the cut is complete, without unloading the mat, use a sharp tool to gently lift the edge and check the cut.
  6. Repeat the cut if necessary by pressing the cut button again.
  7. Once the cut is complete, unload the mat and remove the shapes.

Cut & Press the Heat Transfer Vinyl

  1. Return to Design Space and cut out the heat transfer vinyl mat.
  2. Use a weeding tool weed away the excess vinyl.
  3. Preheat an Easy Press to 265 degrees or set an Easy Press Mini to the Low setting.
  4. Place the faux leather on a heat pressing pad.
  5. Place the heat transfer vinyl name layer on one half of the faux leather shape – the half closest to the triangle point. Cover with a Teflon sheet or cover sheet and press for 5-7 seconds.
  6. Remove the Teflon sheet and try to peel away the clear vinyl cover sheet. If the vinyl lifts up with the cover sheet, place it back down and press again.
  7. Place the pressed faux leather shape underneath your heat pressing pad for a minute or two it can cool flat.

Assemble the Flower Keychain

  1. Now it’s time to create the folded keychain shape and add the hardware.
  2. Add the flower to a 6mm rivet post.
  3. Insert the rivet post into the second hole in the keychain from the pretty side to the backside. (Not the hole near the pointed end hole and not the far hole.)
  4. Slide the key ring onto the triangle opening at the top.
  5. Flip your piece over. Bring the pointed end of the keychain down and place it onto the rivet post.
  6. Push a rivet cap onto the post and use a hammer and rivet tools to secure the rivet in place.

📺You can watch a video tutorial that shows how to fold up the keychain and attach the hardware in a similar project here.

Answers to your questions about making a Faux Leather Flower Name Keychain with a Cricut

Q: Which Cricut machines will cut faux leather?
A: You can cut faux leather with any of the current Cricut machines because they all cut faux leather with the standard fine point blade included with each machine. For this project you can use the Cricut Maker, Cricut Maker 3, Cricut Explore 3, Cricut Explore Air 2, the Cricut Joy Xtra, or the Cricut Joy. For this project you’ll need to use a 12 inch long Joy sized mat with the Cricut Joy.

Q: What do I need to press heat transfer vinyl onto faux leather?
A: To press heat transfer vinyl onto faux leather you’ll need a traditional heat press, Cricut EasyPress, or Cricut EasyPress Mini. I used a Cricut EasyPress Mini for this project because it’s great with pressing small projects like earrings, keychains, and accessories. I set the EasyPress Mini to the Low setting and covered the HTV on the faux leather with a Teflon sheet before pressing for about 10 seconds. For a larger EasyPress I set it to 265 degrees F.

Q: How do I get the SVG template for this project?
A: Get the SVG file from my SVG Shop here.
