Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Gather your supplies – faux leather, heat transfer vinyl, paper clips, and fast drying glue.
Step 2: Unzip the download folder. Then open a blank canvas in Cricut Design Space and upload the SVG files for this project by clicking on the Upload button on the left hand size and choosing the unzipped SVG file.
Click on Upload.
You’ll see a preview of the uploaded shapes. Click Continue.
The planner clip shapes will load on your canvas. There’s a front and back shape to each planner clip design.
Click on the grouped shapes (as shown below). Click on Ungroup (the first icon in the row under the Layers panel).
This ungroups all of the shapes and allows you to edit or move each shape individually.
Decide which planner clip(s) you want to make and hide or delete the other shapes.
Step 3: Click the MAKE IT button.
When the mat previews load, toggle the MIRROR button on for each mat because faux leather and heat transfer vinyl cut in reverse. Then drag your shapes away from the side and top edges of the mat a little.
Do that for each mat. Click Continue.
Step 4: Choose the Faux Leather (Paper Thin) setting with “more” pressure for the faux leather mat. Then choose the appropriate material setting for the vinyl mat recommended by your vinyl’s manufacturer.
Step 5: Now, let’s get started with cutting. Place your faux leather pretty side down on the purple strong grip mat and press it down firmly. Secure the edges with blue painter’s tape to prevent any movement during the cut.
Press the Cut button to begin the cut. Then when the cut is finished, don’t unload the mat yet.
Check the cut with a sharp weeding tool to make sure it went all the way through. If it didn’t, press the cut button again to repeat the cut.
Step 6: When the cut is complete, remove the faux leather from the mat and trim away any fuzzy edges with small detail scissors.
Set aside and return to Design Space to cut any other faux leather mats. Then cut the heat transfer vinyl mats.
Remove the cut vinyl layers from the mat and weed away the excess.
Step 7: Next press the heat transfer vinyl onto the faux leather according to the Layering Guide below.
Start by placing the front faux leather planner clip shape on a heat pressing pad. Then place the first vinyl layer shown in the Layering Guide on top. Cover with a Teflon cover sheet, butcher paper, or parchment paper.
Use your EasyPress Mini set on low (or a regular EasyPress at around 265°F) to press the vinyl to the faux leather. Once pressed, remove the carrier sheet and set the faux leather shape aside to cool.
Press each vinyl layer in order. After the last layer is pressed, place the warm faux leather shape under your heat pressing pad for a minute or two so it cools flat.
Step 8: Once your front piece is cooled, it’s time to glue the paper clip in between the front and back layers of the planner clips.
Use a quick drying glue and apply glue to the back of one piece where the top of the paper clip will go. Put the paperclip on the glue spot.
Then place glue on the paperclip and the rest of the faux leather shape and place the top shape on the bottom. Press well all over with your fingers to seal the edges.
And there you have it-cute and spooky planner clips ready to dress up your notebook, journal, or planner!
